Military intelligence veteran Michelle McGuinness has been appointed national cyber security coordinator by the Department of Home Affairs.

Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness begins her role this week, formally replacing Air Marshall Darren Goldie, who the Defence Department recalled last year following allegations about a workplace matter.

In her last role, McGuinness was the deputy director for Commonwealth integration (DDCI) at the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), where she was responsible for advising the US Defence Intelligence Agency’s director on strengthening collaboration and information-sharing between the Five Eyes nations.

Before she was appointed to the (US Defense Intelligence Agency) DIA, McGuinness was director general of counter-proliferation and terrorism at the Australian Defence Intelligence Organisation.
In a statement on X, McGuinness stated she was excited to get started as national cyber security coordinator, and continue to ensure that Australia is best positioned to respond to threats of the digital age.”
Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil confirmed the appointment, which she said would see Lieutenant General McGuinness lead policy and cultural reform across government.
