Google Maps has recently become the center of controversy for renaming the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for its American users. Following a directive from President Donald Trump, Google Maps reflected the change. However, not everyone has welcomed this alteration. The company has faced backlash and numerous negative reviews, which led to Google barring any further reviews on the Gulf's label.
Google has defended its decision, explaining that due to the potential influx of unrelated or off-topic reviews, it was necessary to halt postings. The tech giant reminded users of its 2023 policy about tackling content that violates established norms, including fake reviews.
However, this hasn't satisfied everyone, with claims of censorship emerging as hundreds of one-star reviews have been allegedly wiped from the platform.
In addition, other entities, including Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum, have voiced their discontent, with Sheinbaum even suggesting a potential lawsuit against Google. It's not just Google feeling the heat over this renaming issue.
Apple Maps, which made a similar change for its US users, is also facing criticism. Meanwhile, amidst these changes, concerns have been raised about influential tech companies trying to win favor with the current administration by adopting controversial policies.
