Sheep facial recognition technology is coming to an Australian farm thanks to New Zealand-based company NeXtgen Agri.

In an upcoming trial on a farm in north-western Victoria, CEO Mark Ferguson plans to utilise a camera, single-core computer, and advanced neural networks to match ewes and their lambs accurately.

Ferguson highlightsed other potential applications beyond sheep farming. For example - It could be used to track animals during transport, making sure the right ones get loaded and unloaded.

The trial is  set to start within the month and is expected to iron out any kinks before commercialising the technology.
