Australia's privacy watchdog is set to start negotiations with Facebook's parent company to resolve the long-standing legal battle surrounding the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) continues to pursue Meta (formerly Facebook) in federal court for alleged privacy breaches affecting over 300,000 Australian users.

Recent successes in the case have allowed the commissioner to continue prosecuting the alleged breaches. The federal court has ordered mediation and a split case to establish liability and potential penalties.

The exposed information was at risk of being disclosed to Cambridge Analytica for political profiling purposes. American and British regulators have already fined Facebook.

Today's decision is a significant step towards holding global digital platforms accountable for handling Australian personal information.
