Tesla is recalling over 1.6 million electric vehicles sold in China due to issues with their automatic steering and door latch controls.

This is the largest recall ever for Tesla in China. The recall will be conducted through remote upgrades, minimising the need for car owners to visit Tesla service centers.

The recall comes after a previous recall in the US for over 2 million vehicles to enhance driver monitoring.

The specific issue in China relates to the automatic steering assist function, which can potentially be misused and increase the risk of accidents.

China is an important market for Tesla, and CEO Elon Musk has established strong connections with Chinese officials.

Tesla's electric vehicle plant in Shanghai serves as a manufacturing base for China, Europe, and other international markets. In the Chinese market for electric vehicles, Tesla ranks second, behind Chinese company BYD.
