U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has proposed that communications service providers submit an annual certification, confirming their readiness to protect against cyber threats.

This move comes in response to a suspected Beijing-backed hacking group, "Salt Typhoon," infiltrating US telecommunication networks to steal data.

Rosenworcel emphasised the need for a modern framework to help companies secure their networks and respond effectively to future cyberattacks.

Concerns have grown over Salt Typhoon's extensive espionage activities, prompting classified briefings for senators.

A top US official reported that substantial American metadata had been stolen by hackers targeting at least eight US telecom and infrastructure firms.

The proposal, currently being considered by other FCC commissioners, will take effect immediately upon approval.
