In a bid to speed up and enhance responses to identity theft amidst escalating data breaches, scams, and cybercrime, the New South Wales (NSW) Police have entered into a significant partnership with the state's identity recovery unit, ID Support NSW.
This collaboration, formalised through a newly-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), follows a worrying surge in fraudulent schemes, one of which involved approximately 14,000 counterfeit identity documents. By working closely with ID Support NSW, the NSW Police were able to pinpoint nearly 1,000 individuals potentially affected by the scheme.
Originated three years ago, ID Support NSW has become a crucial contact point for victims of identity theft or personal data compromise. They collaborate with other NSW agencies and the identity and cyber support service IDCARE to replace compromised credentials and reduce the risk of stolen IDs misuse.
Superintendent Matt Craft, the Cybercrime Squad commander, views this partnership as a significant stride in protecting the public against the increasing threat of identity theft, cybercrime, and scams. Laura Christie, Digital NSW Deputy Secretary, expressed similar optimism about the MoU's potential to enhance collective responsiveness to incidents and provide greater support to victims.
