A company in Victoria responsible for monitoring offenders on bail has abruptly ceased operations, sparking an investigation by the state's Office of Public Prosecutions. First reported by The Age newspaper, Bail Safe, a private service utilising GPS technology to track criminals reintegrated into society, shut down without any prior notification to the relevant authorities.

The incident has left the responsibility to monitor the offenders in question unattended, thereby raising public safety concerns. Victoria's Premier, Jacinta Allan, has publicly denounced Bail Safe's actions as "utterly unacceptable".

The sudden stoppage has directly affected eight ongoing cases, forcing Victoria Police and other key departments to quickly respond to the situation.

Premier Allan has announced that the Office of Public Prosecutions will now investigate thecircumstances surrounding Bail Safe's closure. When questioned whether the incident signifies a failure in the use of private companies for electronic monitoring, Ms. Allan suggested that the point will be assessed by the investigative body.

Despite the concerns raised, Ms. Allan has reassured the public by stating that the incident has had "no impact on the regular work of Victoria Police with their bail compliance checks".

Meanwhile, the Victorian opposition is demanding answers on how the government allowed a bail-monitoring company to collapse. Shadow Attorney-General Michael O'Brien criticised the situation as a "Labor bail fail", questioning the credibility of a system that relies on such undependable services.
