French Authorities Raid Nvidia Offices amidst Growing Concerns of Big Tech Dominance

In the latest move to curb the power of Big Tech companies, French authorities conducted an unexpected raid on the offices of graphics technology firm Nvidia. With a staggering 84% market share in graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia's near-monopoly in the industry has drawn the attention of regulators.

The French competition authority (FCA) said  it conducted the dawn raid a day earlier on a company in the "graphics cards sector", it said. French newspaper Challenges and the Wall Street Journal identified the company as Nvidia.

This action comes as part of ongoing efforts by the FCA to investigate potential anti-competitive practices and ensure a level playing field in the market.

Nvidia's significance extends beyond its market dominance. With a valuation of $1 trillion, the company plays a crucial role in the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Most computing systems powering cutting-edge AI applications, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, heavily rely on Nvidia's GPUs.

The FCA's interest in Nvidia aligns with its broader examination of the cloud computing sector. Dominated by giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, this industry landscape has sparked concerns about fair competition and obstructed growth for potential competitors.
