London’s Metropolitan Police has been accused of using the coronation of King Charles III to stage the biggest live facial recognition operation in British history.
With new laws allowing them to crack down on protest also enacted days before, campaigners feared that this technology could be used for nefarious purposes against protesters and activists alike; despite police assurances to the contrary.
Sure enough – when anti-monarchy demonstrators gathered prior to the ceremony , swift arrests were made on suspicion of conspiracy to cause public nuisance, and for suspicion of possessing items likely intended for criminal damage.
