Hackers have struck the United States government using a common software called MOVEit that enables organisations to transfer files to partners and customers.

MOVEit, is manufactured by Progress Software. Cybersecurity researchers warn that the hackers could have accessed loads of sensitive information. For example - MOVEit,  may be used by financial institutions requiring customer data to apply for loans.

Following the discovery of a gap in MOVEit's file transfer software, several federal agencies have been hit with intrusions.

Eric Goldstein, executive assistant director of cybersecurity at the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), said in a statement that they are "working quickly to understand impacts and create steps for timely remediation."

The US Department of Energy and several other federal agencies were hit in a global hacking campaign that exploited a vulnerability in widely used file-transfer software.

CISA Director Jen Easterly announced on MSNBC that the United States does not expect the breach to have a "significant impact."
