Twitter has pulled back the curtain on the algorithm that controls your timeline. In a serious effort to provide transparency, the social media giant has shared the code and explained the process for selecting which tweets appear in your “For You” section. ‘

The algorithm comprises of three stages, which include gathering top tweets, ranking them with a machine learning model, and filtering out any inappropriate or redundant content.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has long been advocating for Twitter to open source its algorithm, and in February he boldly predicted that it would be achieved by the end of March.

After a flurry of responses from his followers overwhelmingly supporting this move — at 83% - an official date was set so optimal transparency will become reality.

Musk has also been preparing his audience to be disappointed in the algorithm. He’s said it’s “overly complex & not fully understood internally,” and that people will “discover many silly things,” but has promised to fix issues as they’re discovered. “Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality,” he tweeted.
