Cognito Therapeutics Incorporated will soon be conducting late-stage trials of a device for treating Alzheimer's disease.

The trial will involve around 500 US participants wearing a headset for an hour a day over a year.

The headset delivers light and sound at a frequency that improves cognitive ability.

The Massachusetts based start-up, will research the effects of its device on the deterioration of the brain’s white matter, the intertwining neural connections that link all four lobes of the brain.

About 10 million people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementias each year, according to the World Health Organization.

If Cognito's headset proves effective, it could see wide adoption in 2024.
